The Disadvantages of Using Open Sourcing When Designing a Web Product

!±8± The Disadvantages of Using Open Sourcing When Designing a Web Product

Due to its cost-effective nature many businesses today prefer to use open source web products. Being open source means that they are either free or cost relatively less than their customized counterpart. Open source web products wins not only in price but are also preferred because of the wide range of plug-ins and extensions available that can be easily integrated with the website to provide the visitors more features and functionalities that would otherwise be expensive.

Developers too prefer to work mostly with open source systems. The ease of installation, customization and modifications makes it a developers' preference over a customized solution where they have to code from scratch.

Despite the numerous advantages that can be presented supporting the use of open source solution one of its major draw back is security.

Open source by its nature makes all its code available to the world to download. This means not only developers can use these codes to modify and customize the solution for their clients but also hackers can use these codes to identify glitches and loopholes to penetrate the system.

Most of the open source solutions use a default database table names with an option to change them during installation process, for example Joomla CMS uses jos_, WordPress uses wp_, OsCommerce uses os_ table prefixes. These default table name prefixes makes your database more vulnerable to the hackers who uses various mechanism to bombard your database for a successful connection. Once a connection is made hackers are free to start posting data or steal data from your website or even replace your site content with a content of their choosing.

Another area of weakness is that not all files that come with the package are used by all website. Just the other day I was referred a client who maintains an e-commerce web store. His complain was that somehow he was receiving tons of email from the site that was blocking up his mailbox. Upon investigation I discovered that the solution he was using had an Ask a Question to the Seller button in the product description page that was disabled by the developer. However, since he was using an open source, and negligence of the developer I should say, that although the button code was disabled, the page that button lands on was not modified. The spammer was able to identify what open source solution the client was using, and then knowing such a file exists the spammer directly went to the Ask a Question page and started sending mails thousands of them every hour.

Even though an open source web solution may offer thousands of advantages if you do decide to use them be sure that you are well aware of the risks and ensure that all the vulnerabilities are secured.

How a Chain Drive Garage Door System Works

!±8± How a Chain Drive Garage Door System Works

A chain drive garage door opening system lifts the doors by way of a trolley system. There are three different types of openers that do this, the others being belt and screw driven. The chain drive differs from these other system in many ways such as engineering, cost, availability and even how much noise it makes. It's important to understand how such a system works in case you want to perform future maintenance on it. Such knowledge could help save you money by avoiding having to call a garage door service professional.

Like the name indicates, a chain drive opener utilizes a chain that runs along a rail, attaching to the electric motor and a trolley to lift and lower the door. Your garage door is composed of a moderately complex system of pulleys and counter-balances that determine the amount of force which is exerted in opening the door. The motor only controls how far the door can be opened and closed. All of these functions are adjustable and need to be carefully appraised before doing any maintenance. The trolley is connected to an arm that is, in turn, connected to the top of the garage door. The chain drive pulls the trolley back, which moves the arm and garage door back and forth.

One advantage of the chain drive system is that it is basically a glorified pulley system, and it can be operated as such in the event of a power outage. The chain that moves your garage door is part of an assembly unit that is attached to springs. These springs ensure that the door stops in precise positions when open and close. The chain drive is connected to a series of gears and rollers to move the trolley to a general location. Smooth operation is determined by how it is set upon these gears, and its relative attachment to the trolley.

The chain drive is attached to the electric motor which is usually mounted to the roof towards the back of the garage. The chain is fitted around the drive socket on the motor that is powered by your home electricity. The chain is also fitted around and idler sprocket at the opposing end of the main track. This idler sprocket serves only to complete the loop. As the power motor turns the drive socket, the chain guides cables and pulleys onto rotors which facilitate the opening of your garage door. Chain drives, due to their overall simplicity, are among the cheapest available garage door openers and also among the longest lasting.

Eventually, though, the chain can loosen around the drive socket. This requires maintenance to ensure that your garage door remains balanced. This condition can also produce safety hazards like your door becoming stuck or falling. Periodic inspections and lubrication of your chain drive can go a long way toward preventing such a situation. It can also help to quell the noise that they produce, which is really their only drawback.

How to Choose and Install a New Garage Door

The most familiar types of garage doors frequently used in residential garages are retractable, canopy, side hinged, and sectional retractable doors. As compared to old garage doors, new garage doors are much more intelligent, long-lasting, useable and safe.

Residential garage doors are designed to look beautiful and offer new features like automatic door openers and more. Canopy garage doors, which roll up manually, are great alternatives to automatic doors.

If driveway space is a problem in your home, then sectional garage doors are the way to go. Also called up and over doors, they open and close vertically and store along the ceiling. This allows cars to park within inches of the door without diminishing functionality.

Custom made garage doors can be created based on your specifications.

Planning is the First Step

Take advantage of free garage door plans are available online from Stanley, Sears, Wayne Dalton, and more. Create a garage plan that encompasses everything you want in your garage from a heated garage to unique window choices.

The best part about planning your own garage door system is the choice of installing it yourself. However, in the planning stage, we recommend designing the opening and door size to a standard size, which will result in a door that is more economical and easier to install.

Also, free garage plans are an easy way to troubleshoot for problems before they appear. When designing a garage plan, you must choose what your family needs. When built according to garage building plans, a steel garage can cost you up to 40% less than conventional garages.

Install It Yourself

The installation of an original garage door, whether as a replacement for an existing door or as a renovation, is straightforward. Doors come on a factory fitted steel frame ready for quick and convenient on-site installation. All adjustable fixings are provided. Read through the installation instructions for carefully.

Take into consideration that garage doors are large and bulky, and are therefore handled surest by two people. This makes positioning and fixing much easier and safer. However, the installation of a residential garage door can be technical, and possibly it is not appropriate as a do-it-yourself project for less experienced people.

Proper Maintenance

The leading causes of garage door breakdown and replacements include being hit by vehicles and a lack of maintenance.

The ideal maintenance schedule for a garage door includes washing painted steel surfaces several times a year; painting or refinishing wood surfaces as necessary, lubrication of the rollers, bearings, pulleys, and springs once a year, and making correct adjustments to the counter balance system.

Each of the three standard garage door materials has its own benefits. Wood doors are very insulated and they have an appealing look; however, wood expands and contracts and can warp or crack as it weathers. It will need re-painting or refinishing every couple of years.

Steel doors are vigorous and give great value for your money. Today's steel doors have the look of wood without the headaches of the maintenance.

Fiberglass garage doors are also extremely low maintenance, offering a timber effect without the maintenance of real wood. Use a ½ cup of mild laundry detergent mixed with water to wash both the exterior and interior of your steel or fiberglass door twice a year.

Garage doors are a simple and low-cost technique to extend your home's curb appeal and set it apart from the rest. Garage doors are typically the largest visible building component other than the siding on your house.

Garage doors are now offered by manufacturers in a variety of styles that go far beyond the classical paneled look. Even though there are any amount of designs, most garage doors open upward, and are self storing.
